Compagnies Franches de la
Marines The Compagnies Franches de la Marine was the main organization for the defence of New France from 1683 to 1755. The Naval Department of France had been using its own troops to defend French colonies since 1674. The Department began administering New France in 1683, and used the Compagnies to defend the Fur Trade and the local civilians. They were superseded by the arrival of large units of the army under Montcalm in 1756. The Compagnies ceased to exist in Canada after the fall of Montreal in 1760. In 1992 the Canadian Forces Naval Reserve revived the Compagnies as a historical re-enactment unit and has toured the country every summer since.

The Great Northern War 1700-21 was fought between Russia and Sweden for supremacy in the Baltic Sea. Initially, Russia joined the coalition in the war with Denmark and Saxony – composed of the so-called Northern Alliance, but after the outbreak of hostilities the Union collapsed, and was rebuilt in 1709. At various stages of the war other participants attended: on the side of Russia – Hanover, Holland, Prussia, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; on the side of Sweden – the Ottoman Empire, Zaporozhian Cossacks, and others. The war ended with the defeat of Sweden in 1721, leaving Russia dominant in the Baltic Sea and a major player in European politics. The war began as a coordinated attack on Sweden by the coalition in 1700 and ended in 1721 with the Treaty of Nystad and the Stockholm treaties. |

|
The Regiment of Chasseurs-à-Cheval was raised under the name, General-in-Chief's Company of Mounted Guides as the cavalry part of the bodyguard that Napoleon created in Italy 1796. Its first commander was Captain Jean-Baptiste Bessières, the future Marshal of France 1804. The squadron went to Egypt with Napoleon and was renamed to Escadron de Chasseurs-à-Cheval de La Garde Consulaire after his coup in 1799. On 3 January 1800, it consisted of 4 officers and 113 troopers and was commanded by Captain Eugène de Beauhairnais, Napoleon's stepson. |

The French and Indian War 1750's |
||||||
|
The 60th Royal American Regiment of Foot, better known under its later name, The King's Royal Rifle Corps, has long been associated with Canada After Braddock's defeat by the French and Indians in 1755, authority was granted to raise a regiment of four battalions to be recruited in Germany and from German colonists in North America. The regiment was named the 62nd, or Royal American, Regiment of Foot; but it was redesignated the 60th Royal American Regiment of Foot in February 1757. Recruiting for the Royal Americans in North America was disappointing, and more than half its strength was drafted from men rejected by British regiments in Ireland. From this unlikely collection of foreigners and cast-offs was fashioned one of the most renowned corps of the British Army. |

The nickname Iron Brigade, with its connotation of fighting men with iron dispositions, was applied formally or informally to a number of units in the Civil War and in later conflicts. The Iron Brigade of the West was the unit that received the most lasting publicity in its use of the nickname.

The 93rd Sutherland Highlanders became famous for their actions during the Crimean War. The regiment was sent to the Crimea in 1854, after war broke out against Russia, as part of Colin Campbell's Highland Brigade. They took part in the storming of the height above the Alma River followed by a move to Sevastopol. On 24 October they were stationed outside the British-controlled port of Balaklava as part of its very thin defenses. The Russian Army sent a massive force to attack Balaklava, the Russian force was 25,000 strong; but only their massed cavalry pushed right forward down the road to Balaklava. Part of this threat was parried by the immortal charge of General Scarlett's Heavy Cavalry Brigade. The rest, a formidable mass, swept on to charge the 93rd drawn up in line, two deep. "There is no retreat from here, men," Campbell told them as he rode down the line, "you must die where you stand." And the reply of John Scott, the right-hand man, was taken up by them all: "Ay, Sir Colin. An needs be, we'll do that." They fired two volleys and the cavalry charge split in half, galloping to right and left and finally into full retreat. Some of the younger soldiers started excitedly forward for a bayonet charge, but Sir Colin called out, 93rd, 93rd, damn all that eagerness! It was in this action that the regiment earned its nickname of The Thin Red Line, coined by the The Times journalist W.H.Russell. The Times correspondent, W. H. Russell, who standing on the hills above could clearly see that nothing stood between the Russian cavalry and the defenceless British base but the "thin red streak tipped with a line of steel" of the 93rd. Condensed almost immediately into "The Thin Red Line", the phrase has survived to this day as the chosen symbol of everything for which The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders believe themselves to stand. Asked why he had been so unorthodox as to receive a cavalry charge in line instead of in a square. Sir Colin Campbell said; "I knew the 93rd, and I did not think it worth the trouble of forming a square. "From the Argylls History
