Marines in the French Army and navy
1870-1871, Like England of which the Marine Corps dates back to the Lord High
Admirals Regiment, France had and still has Marine Infantry which also dates
back to Regiments raised by Cardinal de Richelieu, one of them being in 1669
Regiment Amiral later Regiment de Vermandois. But when some of these regiments
were used in Europe like any other Regiment the Marines did not disappear, they
were by now the Compagnies de la Mer, in 1622 and later the Compagnies Franches
de la Marine, Free Navy Companies. They were on duty on board ship and overseas.
Other Regiments were raised for duty overseas.
